SEMICONDUCTOR at FACT Liverpool
In the work, these films have been re-contextualised to emphasise and examine three distinct relationships; the erupting volcano as all-powerful and humbling the spectacle as people gather to watch in collective amazement, photograph and be photographed and the taming of the volcano through scientific probing, measurement and human endeavour.
We’re really playing with the idea of the science documentary. Everyone is very familiar now with the very standard format of creating a narrative and a way of documenting science, and hopefully we’re challenging this.- SEMICONDUCTOR

Lorena Turner: Made in China
For this project, items made and packaged in China were purchased in US department stores and bodegas. They remained in their original packaging until they were dusted for fingerprints and then photographed under black lights. This process allowed for the evidence of another's touch, quite possibly the person involved in constructing and packaging the item, to be revealed.more after the jump
Made in China highlights the human factor and invisible history in each object's production, and forces us to reconsider the relationship those who are leaving their fingerprints on each item may have with it.

PreBook: cyclo.id by Carsten Nicolai
A decade since its inception on Raster Noton, Ryoji Ikeda and Carsten Nicolai are relaunching their collaborative project, cyclo., a project that focuses on the visualisation of sound and seeks to create a new hybrid of visual art and music. In their shared work, they generate new hybrid forms of audiovisual art and expand the possibilities of digital technology.
Essentially the sounds on 'Id' are inextricable from their visual corollary. They're the unmastered sonic illustrations of detailed graphical data, and vice versa, developed from a database of sounds composed to produce visual responses when analysed in real time with the help of stereo image monitoring equipment. Most importantly, the sounds are subservient to the image, hence the record remains purposefully unmastered in order to retain the waveform's original integrity when visualized through an XY phase scope, transcending the usual sound>image dynamic. Release Date: September 2011 Format: 18,5 x 23 cm Features: 328 pages, b/w, hardcover, incl. CD-Rom Language: English Publisher: Gestalten

Samuel Bianchini: all over
I love this one! strongly recommended to watch it here
All Over is an online artwork based on a series of images composed of typographic characters in the manner of ASCII art, that is using the display techniques of the first computers. In this case, however, the figures and letters composing the images are dynamic and keep changing: they are generated in real time following the rise and fall of stock market indexes around the world. The originally still images change according to the volume of financial transactions, which simultaneously feed and disrupt the photographs. The images are destabilized by the display system, and their meaning in turn becomes unstable. Caught between the digital and the financial, and between two forms of representation, these pictures without captions seem to be constantly struggling for their visibility and their uncertain reality. What is it that they show us? A demonstration, traders, supporters, a religious or political rally...?

New Book: Switching Codes
Switching Codes
Thinking Through Digital Technology in the Humanities and the Art
"At a moment when culture’s digital makeover seems to have induced epistemological vertigo in many, Switching Codes offers a timely and well-targeted intervention…. Bartscherer, Coover, and their authors take up the challenges posed by the digital arts and humanities, mapping their new contexts, defining their analytic repertoire, and compelling a fresh set of insights. More than a portrait of our times, Switching Codes exemplifies the very logics that it explicates."William Uricchio, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Untitled (Hello World)
The Untitled (Hello World) sign by Valentin Ruhry is an enormous grid of 5,000 orange rocker switches that illuminate when switched on. The piece is currently on display as part of the Fünf Räume (five rooms) exhibition at the Austrian Cultural Forum NYC through September 5. I can only hope they might let you flick a few of these awesomely tactile switches. (via triangulation)

RYOJI IKEDA: The Transfinite
Ryoji Ikeda
A Japanese sound and visual artist who lives and works in Paris, Ikeda has collaborated with such artists as choreographer William Forsythe, architect Toyo Ito, musician and visual artist Carsten Nicolai, and photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. Shown widely in Europe and Japan, this is his first major installation in the United States.
The Earth turns without me.
Work by swiss artist Christian Waldvogel. to fully understand this great project visit:
The Earth turns without me.
The Earth turns about one degree of longitude every 4 minutes. In Switzerland, this amounts to 1158km/h, supersonic at altitudes above 4'000m AMSL.
Flying westward at said speed in a Swiss Air Force Tiger F–5, we didn't turn with the Earth from Glarus to Lucerne. We documented the standstill by taking a picture of the Sun during those four minutes, which resulted in a point.
