Apropos Bachmann-Preis

Data Visualization to the max: tele-present water

This installation draws information from the intensity and movement of the water in a remote location. Wave data is being collected in real-time from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data buoy Station 46246 (49°59’7″ N 145°5’20″ W) on the Pacific Ocean. The wave intensity and frequency is scaled and transferred to the mechanical grid structure installed at The National Museum in Wroclaw, Poland. The result was a simulation of the physical effects caused by the movement of water from this distant location.

The Connected States of America

The Connected States of America illustrates the emerging communities based on the social interactions through the use of anonymized mobile phone data. The project is a collaboration between MIT’s Senseable City Lab and the AT&T Research Lab.

Tender Noise

They even build there own sensor-network, since there doesn't exist one for acoustic pollution...

TenderNoise (TN) is an applied acoustic ecology project that invites a large audience ranging from urban planners to government officials, from local residents to global design technologists to consider sound as a key proxy for urban activity, with all of its positive and negative ramifications.
TN collects, maps and layers noise data across Tenderloin, San Francisco, exploring the aural quality of streets via frequently-logged historical decibel (dBA) levels over a few days period.
TN has been developed as part of the CityCentered Festival organized by GAFFTA in June 2010. The project is the outcome of many individuals who are employed at various organizations and who have collaborated on a pro-bono basis. Three key organizations involved are Stamen Design, Movity.com and Arup

Arctic Perspective

In August, Cahier No. 3 of the series "Arctic Perspective" will be published. After Architecture (No.1), Arctic Geopolitics and Autonomy (No 2.), it's focus will be on Technology.

Arctic Perspective uses media art and the research of artists to investigate the complicated, global, cultural, and ecological interrelations in the Arctic, and to develop concepts for constructing tactical communications systems and a mobile, eco-friendly research station, which will support interdisciplinary and intercultural collaborations. Scheduled to run over a period of years, this project will involve workshops, field work in the Arctic, publications, exhibitions, and a conference.

Dream or Nightmare?

  By Jonas Loh

The dream of self-sufficiency and sustainability has become true. Everyone is now able to produce goods, to communicate with anyone without being charged or tracked and to fulfill their basic needs without forgoing modern conveniences.

Cruiser Charisma intertwines extrapolations about the latest (and upcoming) advances in technologies with a series of research trips that designer Jonas Loh made into intentional communities, groups of people who attempt to establish their own society on a micro-scale. He visited Earthaven which is ruled by community consensus and divided in small villages, went to see what remained of the ethics and ideals of The Farm and even made a trip to Berlin, Ohio, to get to know the Amish lifestyle built around religious beliefs and resistance to any form of modernity.

Bookdesign: Studio Filippo Nostri

Book for artist Riccardo Baruzzi, printed on the occasion of his solo exhibition ‘Quando disegno non canto’.
The catalog is intended as a sort of address book: 4 sections A, B, C and D act as carriers of the artist’s various types of productions. Both the cover design (which simply offers all sections with their titles), and its construction (glued on back cover only), allow to see the entire structure of the book.

Electronic Instant Camera

and again Niklas Roy:

My ‘Electronic Instant Camera’, is a combination of an analog b/w videocamera and a thermal receipt printer. The device is something in between a Polaroid camera and a digital camera. The camera doesn’t store the pictures on film or digital medium, but prints a photo directly on a roll of cheap receipt paper while it is taking it. As this all happens very slow, people have to stay still for about three minutes until a full portrait photo is taken.

And here’s the AVR-GCC source code.
Some more hires photos are in this Picasa album.

Why kids should love science and math

Augmented pong

New Project by Niklas Roy (before: my little peace of privacy):

How it works:
The game is programed with AVR-GCC on an ATmega8 microcontroller that runs with 16MHz. The controller gets basic videosignal synchronisation information from an LM1881 sync separator that triggers two hardware interrupts. One for a new image, the other one for a new line. The controller evaluates the brightness around the pixel (/ball) via its comparator input. Drawing the white image overlay is realized with a simple pull-up resistor in the signal line.
