Karl Martens
The work of Karel Martens occupies an intriguing place in the present European art-and-design landscape. Martens can be placed in the tradition of Dutch modernism – in the line of figures such as Piet Zwart, H.N. Werkman, Willem Sandberg. Intimately connected with this design work has been his practice as an artist. This started with geometric and kinetic constructions, and was later developed in work with the very material of paper; more recently he has been making relief prints from found industrial artefacts.

Splendor by Sebastian Schwinkendorf and Matthias Löwe
Splendor maps the photographs of landmarks in connection to the landmarks itself. As a result, each landmark can be characterized with respect to its "best viewed angle", the distance at which it is typically photographed, etc.

Twitter polarizes
Previously, we used to have a national media, including newspapers and network TV, produced a fairly unidirectional message. It was like we were all forced to sit in on the same lecture, delivered by the big responsible adults who weren't supposed to favor either side. Today, we can now ignore those adults and break off into whatever little subgroups we like. We can easily listen to only the people we agree with, and the charts above show that this is in fact what seems to be happening. And that can't be good for our political dialogue.

The exhibition of the important architect of the "New Frankfurt" and Frankfurt Planning Director Ernst May will present for the first time the complete works of all his creative periods – on the basis of historical photographies, plans and models May's legs in Frankfurt, the Soviet Union and Africa will be displayed amongst others.
Unfortunatly the Exhibition focuses only on celebrating instead of evaluating the difficulties with his heritage as well.

Bjork’s Biophilia iPad app and its first in-app release, Crystalline, are STUNNING. Seriously, words cannot really do it justice. You play a game where you collect crystals in certain sequences to unlock different arrangements and elements of the song, which you can then arrange in real-time while playing the game by choosing different tunnel. I’m addicted, and Bjork is giving me something I’m willing to spend money on.Stop whining, music industry and get creative!

This map shows 1645 twitter accounts related to the topic of information visualization. The accounts were determined as follows: For a subjective selection of "seed accounts", the twitter API was queried for followers and friends. In order to be included into the map, a user account needed to have at least 5 links (i.e. follow or being followed) to one of these accounts. The size of the network nodes indicates the number of followers within this network.made with gephi, embeded with visualizing player

SEMICONDUCTOR at FACT Liverpool
In the work, these films have been re-contextualised to emphasise and examine three distinct relationships; the erupting volcano as all-powerful and humbling the spectacle as people gather to watch in collective amazement, photograph and be photographed and the taming of the volcano through scientific probing, measurement and human endeavour.
We’re really playing with the idea of the science documentary. Everyone is very familiar now with the very standard format of creating a narrative and a way of documenting science, and hopefully we’re challenging this.- SEMICONDUCTOR

Lorena Turner: Made in China
For this project, items made and packaged in China were purchased in US department stores and bodegas. They remained in their original packaging until they were dusted for fingerprints and then photographed under black lights. This process allowed for the evidence of another's touch, quite possibly the person involved in constructing and packaging the item, to be revealed.more after the jump
Made in China highlights the human factor and invisible history in each object's production, and forces us to reconsider the relationship those who are leaving their fingerprints on each item may have with it.
Marshall McLuhan, born 100 years ago!
This book, published in 1967, was McLuhan's best seller, "eventually selling nearly a million copies worldwide." Initiated by Quentin Fiore, McLuhan adopted the term "massage" to denote the effect each medium has on the human sensorium, taking inventory of the "effects" of numerous media in terms of how they "massage" the sensorium.
McLuhan himself just approved the selection of text passages as well as pictures, typography and layout. The ruour is spread that the only thing McLuhan contributed was to leave the misspelling of message.

Apropos Float: Ab in die Tiefe
Apropos Float:

Yesterday was the launch of visual.ly, a newnetworking platform for infographics and datavisualizations.
Once their web servers can handle the load, the new and the already much hyped website allows access to over 2,000 different infographic illustrations, uploaded by designers like JESS3 and David McCandless, and including a large collection of own infographics. Visual.ly has already attracted key partners in publishing, design and distribution, including The Atlantic, CNNMoney.com, eBay, GOOD Magazine, OMD, National Geographic, The Next Web, and Smirnoff. Each of these publications is allowed to upload its own graphics, which can then be embedded and shared via a Visual.ly-created embed code.

PreBook: cyclo.id by Carsten Nicolai
A decade since its inception on Raster Noton, Ryoji Ikeda and Carsten Nicolai are relaunching their collaborative project, cyclo., a project that focuses on the visualisation of sound and seeks to create a new hybrid of visual art and music. In their shared work, they generate new hybrid forms of audiovisual art and expand the possibilities of digital technology.
Essentially the sounds on 'Id' are inextricable from their visual corollary. They're the unmastered sonic illustrations of detailed graphical data, and vice versa, developed from a database of sounds composed to produce visual responses when analysed in real time with the help of stereo image monitoring equipment. Most importantly, the sounds are subservient to the image, hence the record remains purposefully unmastered in order to retain the waveform's original integrity when visualized through an XY phase scope, transcending the usual sound>image dynamic.
