Offprint Paris (Link) is an Art Publishing Fair focused on emerging practices in Art.

We give special attention to the evolution of publishing/curating from traditional “spaces” (catalogues, artists books, photobooks, newspapers, but also museums and schools) towards new spaces and artists organizations (independent publishing, self publishing strategies, websites, blogs, social networks, activism, non institutional activities...).

We consider that the topic of “Publishing” can offer a stimulating hermeneutic to analyse the structure and development of the contemporary art world in a context of digitalization of cultures.

Imperfect Health by Lars Müller Publishers is a collection of essays, photographs, and informative blurbs (each distinguished in the table of contents by groupings of key words – from asthma and allergies to longevity and retirement). The book is a visually-engaging, comprehensive study of the history of the medicalization of architecture. The book tracks how the 20th century notion of the city has changed from that of a “sick body” that infects  its citizens to the 21st century idea of the city as a therapeutic instrument that ‘cures’ its citizens.

Mein Lieblingsbuch von Mo Yan: Die Schnapsstadt.

Vielleicht auch mein Lieblingsbuch, weil ich es auf einem der aufregendsten Reiseabschnitt aller meiner Reisen gelesen habe. Zwischen Höhenrauch und AMS, auf dem Weg durch den Wilden Norden von Yunnan nach Markam. Um auf den langen Trekkings Gewicht zu sparen hab ich jedes gelesene Kapitel des immerhin 511 Seiten starken Buchs zum Anfeuern benutzt. Das Buch ist jedes Gramm wert!

Buchtipp Industriegeschichte

Der Erfinder des Dynamits, Alfred Nobel, kaufte 1871 zusammen mit Partnern die damals stillgelegte Papierfabrik in Isleten und begann für den Gotthardbahnbau Dynamit zu produzieren. Damit begann die Geschichte der schweizerischen Sprengstoffindustrie. Bis heute wird Isleten, auf einem Bachdelta am Urnersee gelegen, durch die Gebäude dieser Fabrik geprägt. Der Autor schreibt nicht nur die Lokalgeschichte des Ortes mit den besonderen Verhältnissen der Erschliessung auf dem Seeweg sowie der bisher geheimen Reduit-Artilleriefestung, sondern auch ein Stück Urner Wirtschaftsgeschichte und die wechselvolle Geschichte der Sprengstoffindustrie in der Schweiz mit ihren internationalen Verflechtungen und dem Wandel der Sprengstoffprodukte. Das Buch schliesst damit eine Lücke in der Schweizer Industriegeschichte.

Entdeckung: Mapping Istanbul

This book presents an initial effort to map the city of Istanbul, a city steeped in complexity. Working collaboratively with Garanti Galerie and architects Superpool, Project Projects established a uniform visual style for the hundreds of maps and information graphics included. The book's design presents this information in an accessible, narrative sequence, creating a valuable resource for architects, planners, and policy-makers invested in the city's future.

Visual Editions (VE), also known for their books "Tree of Codes" and "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman", have a new book coming.

Composition No. 1 is the first ever “book in a box”. The book was written in 1961 by Marc Saporta, Universal Everything designed it, introduction is by Tom Uglow of Google and it features diagrams by Salvador Plascencia .

Ich habs vor langer Zeit mal in der sibirischen Eisenbahn gelesen, wie der Fisch im Wasser, sozusagen. Ich hab Tränen gelacht und die Unwirtlichkeiten der weiteren Reise mit einer kumpelhaften Gelassenheit den Russen gegenüber hingenommen.
Ich werds diesen Sommer nochmals lesen. Diesmal auf dem Liegestuhl, an der gesunden Meerluft, als Kontrastprogramm sozusagen.

Buch-Tipp: Float

Ein Buch übers Bauen auf dem Wasser. Liegt ja eigentlich auf der Hand, so langsam damit zu beginnen, die schönen freien Wasserflächen auch noch zuzustellen. Und die Zersiedelung an Land wär dann sicher kein Thema mehr. Ausserdem sind 71% der Erdoberfläche von Wasser bedeckt und Fische hats eh bald keine mehr. Legen wir los!

A decade since its inception on Raster Noton, Ryoji Ikeda and Carsten Nicolai are relaunching their collaborative project, cyclo., a project that focuses on the visualisation of sound and seeks to create a new hybrid of visual art and music. In their shared work, they generate new hybrid forms of audiovisual art and expand the possibilities of digital technology.

Essentially the sounds on 'Id' are inextricable from their visual corollary. They're the unmastered sonic illustrations of detailed graphical data, and vice versa, developed from a database of sounds composed to produce visual responses when analysed in real time with the help of stereo image monitoring equipment. Most importantly, the sounds are subservient to the image, hence the record remains purposefully unmastered in order to retain the waveform's original integrity when visualized through an XY phase scope, transcending the usual sound>image dynamic. Maria Fischer: Traumgedanken

Das Buch »Traumgedanken« beinhaltet eine Sammlung an literarischen, philosophischen, psychologischen und wissenschaftlichen Texten, die einen Einblick in verschiedene Sichtweisen rund um das Träumen liefern.

Die Grafik Designerin Maria Fischer aus Augsburg hat 2010 ihr Kommunikationsdesign-Studium abgeschlossen. Momentan arbeite sie bei »Rose Pistola« in München.

Hacking the City

Hacking the City took place on the occasion of the “European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.”
Participants were artists, web designers, practitioners of guerrilla communication, street artists, performers, and musicians.
